When I used to plow in the '70s, the first pile went in the bed. By the time you have pushed it around it was very dense and heavy. Either I would stack it tall and shovel it in, or if bigger yellow gear was around they were happy to throw you a bedful.
An alternate I used in the '90s for weight in the bed was a waterbed mattress (Walmart $20 Single fits between the wheel wells) strapped down until it bowed up around the straps and then filled with water and let 'er freeze.
Both are cheap and easy to dispose of when done.
