remove PTO shaft - how to?

How do you remove the PTO driveshaft powering the winch? ('52 B3 Power Wagon) It seems like a simple enough task, but I didn't have any luck on my first try. I figure I'd ask the experts if there's a trick before doing it the hardway and/or tearing somethig up.
