check the return spring, above the pedal - inside the cab - under the dash. It may have weakened over the past 38 years.
If the truck is shifting ok, then there is probably not a problem with the hydraulics.
Does the throw out arm (at the bellhousing) return all the way? If not, weak Pressure Plate "fingers" can cause this symtom.
