I have had to do a lot of work in this area on my 77 w200 in the past. I had the opposite problem, not enough voltage. I had to remove the ammeter from the circuit, the gage was bad. First do this for a quicky test. There is a test in the Chilton manual or other repair manuals that by passes the voltage regulator to determine if the alternator or reg. is bad. You may have a shorted wire in the harness. Get a wiring diagram from a repair manual and ohm one wire at a time to ground to see if anything is shorted. You will need to disconnect both ends of each wire to get proper readings. You will need a volt meter with ohms scale. Good luck. Electrical problems can be difficult. I got a new wiring harness for the engine compartment from saturn surplus. It helped me out, my wires were fried somewhere along the way.
