Hi Gordon,
From every thing I've read and from talking to Ford owners, the Cummins does get better fuel mileage than the Ford but I wouldn't call it significant. About 2-4 MPG from what I've seen and heard. The Cummins engine is considered to have a substantially longer service life over the Ford. Even the EPA rating for expected engine life reflects this fact. Dodge will have a crewcab starting with the 2002 model year. They will start with the 1500 series. The 2500 and 3500 crewcab will come a little later. I have a 95 Dodge clubcab w/Cummins, 5-speed, 4x4, 3.54 gears. This is a fantastic combination. I get 18-22 MPG w/truck empty or loaded and 14-16 MPG towing 5,000 to 8,000 lbs. No lockout hubs has been no problem in 135,000 mi. and it is a small price to pay to have the Cummins engine. I don't think the frame material size is any concern at all. I haven't compared the two but the Dodge has everything it needs. I have read that Dodge will keep the straight axle for the heavy-duty trucks but I could be wrong about that. It would be a shame to loose that. One of my best friends just bought a 6-speed HO Cummins. Let me tell you, that is one more bas *** hot rod Diesel truck. I hope I don't need to buy another one for several years but if I were in the market right now the 6-speed Dodge would be my only choice. His mileage isn't what mine is but all I'll ever see of him is tail lights.
