Trees may grow back, but once that petroleum is burned, that carbon is released from permanent underground stores. It took millions of years to concentrate that carbon in those tar sands. Once we burn it, it will be choking our atmosphere. All the trees on Earth cannot soak up carbon as fast as we release it from fossil fuels. Trees are already busy recycling carbon from the previous trees that burned or died and decomposed. Fossil carbon is why we have a greenhouse problem.

I have friend in family in North Dakota, some working directly in the new oil fields. The current oil boom is a blessing and a curse. I tend to think it is more of the latter. There is a good story on the Bakken and what it is doing to the locals in the current Earth Island Journal.
