Correct. I don't know how the idea got out there that they're somehow pumping sandy oil through the pipelines. That would be impossible and absurd, but I hear it from the anti-pipeline crowd regularly. It's only the extracted oil that goes through the pipe. One thing for sure about the tar sands is if that's what we're down to for oil sources, we're really scraping the bottom of the barrel. It's like making oil out of an asphalt street.
When Alexander Mackenzie floated down the Mackenzie river, he reported that in places the river banks were burning. This was where the river had cut through the tar sands and it had somehow caught fire.
