I need to figure out how to wire my engine systems on the 6x6. The 318 engine and alternator are from a 1971 D500. It has a factory points distributor, 2 field wires on the alternator with electronic voltage regulator, and 4 wires on the ballast resistor. Having looked at a bunch of diagrams, I can't make out why there are 4 wires on the ballast. Also, I can't tell which way to hook up the alternator field wires. Being DC, I assume it matters.
I'm tempted to create a mixed system that uses the electronic voltage regulator, and 3 wires on the ballast, but I'm not sure it can be done. Any thoughts?
