A new door tag could be a big "red flag" to a CHP officer. That is the type of "shenanigans" they are looking for. I believe it's also illegal to falsify VIN
plates.
Best to fess up to the problems with the truck and hope you get a sympathetic officer who will sign off on the truck and provide a new state-generated VIN. I hope you have some paperwork to support your ownership.
We all do it, but it's not the best thing to buy a vehicle without the correct paperwork. A legible VIN tag and frame number are important. I hope you got a sufficient reduction in price to compensate you for the problems you may encounter.
