That's such a fundamental human right that every legal system in the world, including the UN, at least pays lip service to it. To have a meaningful right to self defense, you have to have a meaningful mechanism for defending yourself. In our current age, looking at the totality of circumstances, a gun is still the best overall mechanism for last-ditch defense of yourself and others. If you don't feel the need for it, that's fine.
But if I'm told that I have a constitutional, common-law, and universal right to defend myself, and yet I'm not allowed to possess a viable means of doing so, it's not much of a right. It's like being told I have the right to free speech, but I'm not allowed to use a computer, printing press, pen, telephone, or megaphone.
