Probably best to pull the trans to work on it. Given your luck, you will be doing it anyway to replace the clutch, throwout bearing and pilot bushing. And don't forget to replace the bushings in the cross shaft and while you're at it, the bushings in the pedals.
Have I forgotten anything?
