His explanation of how the bulb works is vague, so here is mine:

The bulb lights because the filament sees positive polarity from the battery, but gets it's negative polarity thru the alternator windings. (They are grounded on one side permamently) It's only negative when the alternator isn't being used (engine off). When the engine starts and the alternator begins to charge, the windings become positive polarity instead of negative. This makes your idiot light go out indicating the charging system is fine.

I am guessing that the light only comes on at idle speed, then goes out when you apply throttle? If so, try putting a smaller diameter pulley on the alternator, or try the resistor mentioned in the old tractor post.
