It seems like the B-17 was taken down a few years ago. It's been quite awhile since I have been by. At least there was an article in the Oregonian about it and as I recall pretty much confirms the story as related. The story also told about how it got there and put up but I don't remember for sure that part of it. Seems like it was trucked there. Was always a landmark out that way.
