Tire/wheel Sizing

I'm looking at putting 38" radial all terrain tires on my 1970 W300. These days rims are not limited to 16" but go as high as 20" for offroad tires. It's not clear to me if I should stick with a 16" rim, or move up to a 20" possibly getting a little more handling. Does anyone have experience or thoughts on this?
