Look at the shaft it is mounted to. They can wear badly. You can replace the shaft by grinding the weld off and then weld in a new one. I had this done. I also put compression (wavy) washers on the shaft when mounting the levers to reduce some rattle. You can have any shop remove the bushing and press in a new one and ream it to the correct diameter.
I believe that the shaft is 3/4". You can make a new shaft. The hardest part is to drill the cotter pin hole if you do not have access to a drill press.
