not all sleeves have that sharp edge . The roll up at the back is used to install the sleeve and the front edge has a taper to help the seal . BUT that only works when the sleeve is installed part way down the shaft . Imagine what would happen if the sleeves tapered edge was a little proud , or stuck out from the end of the shaft . The other kind of sleeve has two rolled edges , one that goes down instead of that sharp tapered edge . Timken even has a write up describing how the seal spring can get flipped out by snagging on this edge but i sure could not find a list of their "wear sleeves " that use the double edge .
I may end up using a standard sleeve and modify the edge . The sleeve is not going to go on all the way , just "mostly" on . Kind of like being "mostly dead "
thanks for your thoughts

This seal is inside a transfer case . the shaft sticks out from another case . It is a lot like lining up a transmission and the seal would be buried in the pilot shaft area . The parts will go together blind .
