You may be right on the air bleed. Cummins has 'jiggle valves' to bleed air during a coolant fill. A genuine Cummins Thermostat
has a small hole with a 'jiggle valve' to eliminate air during fill. Aftermarket T Stats appear to eliminate the 'jiggle valve'.
