They are there because the block gets hot spots. Because of low pressure.

Talk to an engine machinist.

Water pumps do pressurize blocks if you run a thermostat. I've checked my own 230 and get 10 psi. at max rpms.

But that pressure drops after the hard pull. A few more psi won't do any harm.

Geeze, guys, there has been progress in the world since the '40s. Or do you still run non detergent with no filter in your lube system too? Pressurized cooling systems have been around for 80 years or more, Dodge was very late, but changed 40 years ago. What kind of troglodytes are you?

Pressure caps are cheaper, more readily available ($6 on eBay. NOW.) and beneficial.

But they are not to OE spec. Neither is our oil, brake fluid, rubber hoses, seat belts, paint, primer, wiper blades, neoprene seals, wax, power steering,....
