With the establishment of the EPA and new air standards, Chrysler considered updating the truck, but it was to costly to retool, so they began exports to off-shore countries. Although the PW was still in demand in the U.S. mainly by the U.S. Forest Service, it was never a real money maker for Chrysler.
As we've seen, we have some very sharp guys, and through a little ingenuity, created adaptors to mount V8's and used existing parts to make the upgrade. I don't know why Chrysler could not have done that.
