The 89-93 still have a primitive computer(ECM). It controls the charging, ac, speedometer, cruise, OD etc. It seems like you can do without it but you can't...when they pack it in you'll be in for expensive repairs & you'll be left stranded. Luckily with the First gen's you can bypass everything to get you home but watch out for any flashing lights...especially the "Wait To Start" light. If it starts flickering...get it stopped quickly or you'll fry your whole wiring harness.
These are awesome trucks but the wiring is poor & just keep an eye on it. At 90k you should be ok. Mine has 120k & I just went through it all...7 days of misery hunting for a short & finally found it back behind the fuel filter. A new front wiring harness later & $350 new ECM & I'm back fixed :)
They're incredible trucks but they aren't invincible.
