In my humble (but always correct) opinion, NASCAR went to hell in about 1971. Remember the slogan, "Race on Sunday, sell on Monday"? You could go down to your local Dodge dealer - or Chevy or Ford - and come home with something fairly close to what they were running at Talledega or Daytona.
My cousin did just that; bought one of those Dodge Chargers with the big wing and extended snout on it. 440 with six barrels and a four-speed, in puke yellow with a black vinyl roof. The only drawback was that you could never park it at the curb; you couldn't see over that nose to the car that was in front of you...
