I have an old 6 kW 2-cyl Onan diesel genset that works good. I'm pretty sure it was made in the USA. There's a military version (MEP-???) that is basically the same thing but with a 24 volt starter, more gauges, and derated to 5 kW since the military rates them at 80% power factor. I'd have to look up the military model number. Mine goes real easy on the fuel. I got it for free, worn-out by a construction guy from Alaska, but with a new piston and a do-it-yourself valve grind it ran fine. Runs at 1800 RPM rather than the 3600 which is more common for small gensets, which should translate into twice the engine life.
What I don't know is if they still make them, but if you have the budget for a new one, you should be able to get an army surplus unit it top condition from a dealer for considerably less.
