that sounds like it got super hot. good idea on the grease check. maybe seal cooked also.
on the shoes; all professionaly riveted shoes in my experience are bonded and riveted. I believe the original riveted shoes would have also been both as well. if they werent we would see them coming apart from shrinkage on these ancient trucks we work on.
