True WWII combat wheels had about 22 plys of steel cord to protect the tire. I had original tires on a 42 Dodge Command Car (this was in 1968) I saw a piece of metal sticking out, thinking it was a nail I pulled it out. It was a 2" piece of shrapnel!!! = ) That tire had a 1" contact patch, with or without air!! And even with the scrapnel, it did not leak!
