Thanks for some other ideas. The engine is really in pretty good shape; the cylinders are smooth, the valves seat tightly, the main bearings aren't worn, the valve guides aren't loose. I was surprized the intakes' stems were so crudded up with not very many hours on it and I guess I'm looking for clues to why it ran so crappy before. Maybe the crud is just normal. I did clean everything up with the wire wheel while I had it apart, so we'll see what happens.
