I work on commercial aircraft for a living and have driven quite a few rivets. When I drive a rivet "hot" it is to aneal(soften) the aluminum rivet so that it can be driven without cracking the head of the rivet. I am not aware of any further tightening of the fastener after cooling although I suppose this might happen. How does this relate to steel rivets? Also after heat treating a DD aluminum rivet it is stored on ice to keep it soft so they have the nickname of "icebox rivets".Can this also be done to steel rivets?
