Since each layer of cable has a different working strength, more may not be better. You will have the maximum power the winch can produce on the first layer next to the drum, and (off the top of my head) you loose about 1,000# for each layer out from the drum. As you can see, once you get out to the fifth or sixth layer, you are no longer working with an 8,000# winch. For this reason, Charlie's idea of using extensions is good because you can still get the distance while working with the power on wrap # 2 or 3.
