diff. grease in outer hub

i just tore into my outer front axle to check bushings when i pulled outer hub off i had about 1/4 cup of diff. grease in outer hub. also are the outer bearings packed or do they get grease when you fill the knuckles with a grease gun through the top grease fitting thanks jan
