In general the M-1-4 half ton had an open cab and five lug wheels, the M-2-4 1 ton had an open cab but six lug wheels. The M-3-4 1 1/2 ton had the closed cab, which was the civvy truck cab, and six lug wheels while the M-3-6 was an open cab 6x6 version of the 1 1/2 ton. The M-5-6 2 1/2 ton 6x6 had both open and closed cab version. There is the remains of one of the open cab M-5-6 versions in Casa Grande, Az. The open cab was one of the requirements of the USMC for quick entry and exit.
As a side note, a little over a year ago I missed out on a M-1-4 that was fitted with duals and a dump body, figure it must have been a SeaBee truck. It had a very nicely done hard cab that had been on there for a long time, maybe done while in the Navy service as it had gray paint on it also.
