I did roughly the same thing, but on a larger scale, with the rear spring shackle on my truck.
The eye had been "egged" out by the pin. I drilled the opening larger and tapped it for a 3/4" pipe nipple. I then drilled out the pipe nipple to accommodate a new pin. Seems to work fine.
