Though I think the extra price you pay for name brands is to cover the cost of the snake oil additives. ;^)
I believe it's the resins that are important. Epoxy is epoxy. I used TCP Global 'restoration shop' DTM epoxy. (ebay) Then top coated with semi gloss urethane.
The way POR fades makes it sound like epoxy. Epoxy is awesome primer, sticks to bare metal (DTM= Direct To Metal) but it can't handle UV.
TCP is $110 for a KIT of paint, hardener, and reducer. Paul's attitude seems to be "All that work, why not pay the extra for material". My attitude is "I'm an amateur painter. It will come out better than sooo many cars I see on the road. My Painter is the weak point. No sense buying extra snake oil when the quality of the elbow grease is my limiting factor. Why pay triple for paint when I'm going to 220 so much orange peel and runs off."
YMMV. Fersure.
Anecdote:
On my latest project, painting a bare cab, 'the painter' screwed up. My 'me-ness' got the better of me. My brand new swap meet buy of a Devilbiss SS gun with remote 2 qt pot, all stainless steel, $5, was fubared. But did I test drive it? Nooo. I had used the HF gun for priming. Then filled the 'good' gun with Urethane. It squirted a pint all over the driveway before I could shut it off. Fix that problem, all the while dribbling paint on my shoes. Thank HF for rubber gloves. Go ahead, refill the pot, and spray on the most gawdawful orange peel ever. Gun waaaay out of adjustment, but do I stop? NOOOoooo. Not ME. Just Bull dog ahead. Let it dry a day, wet sand 220. Finally, gun works good. I shot it on the rotisserie though. Great to paint sufaces that are angled, not vertical. In a visqueen 'booth'. Top, front, back, bottom look good. But sides I couldn't reach well. But do you think I stop? NOOOOoo. Sides, only a few inches wide, have a half dozen runs. 600 grit there, and touch up when I spray the doors. 1/2 gallon down, and only stripped cab Blue.
$400/gallon vs $110? I hope you get better mileage than me. But you're you, and I'm ME. Dammit.
