That happened to me on a newly rebuilt engine. All those loose parts that fell into the engine got juggled around by the crankshaft. It just about wrecked the new engine.
Now, the first thing I do if I need to use a new fuel pump is to remove the pivot pin and replace it with a bolt and nut with the end of the bolt drilled and a cotter pin inserted so the nut can not work loose.
