I can't tell on either my old or new trucks whether the lockouts are engaged when I am driving. The old trucks because they are rough and noisy anyway and the newer trucks because they are smooth and quiet even with the hubs engaged.
I like lockouts because you don't have the axles, drive shafts and differentials turning uselessly and wearing out seals and bearings.
