Hi,

I am looking at a centered differential rear axle from a Carryall to go under my civilian 1 ton FFPW. This will be used for a future Cummins 4BT upgrade. The axle I am considering is from an early 3/4 ton Carryall with the bolt on differential cover and 8-3/4 inch, 4.30 gears. I will want to run 9-5/8 inch, 4.89 gears eventually. My questions/confirmations are:

1. Are there any strength differences (axle shafts, tubes, ect) between the early (bolted diff cover) and later (welded diff cover) 3/4 ton axles? Are the axle shafts the same?
2. To use this early axle with 4.89 gears, I would use the entire third member from my civilian axle and re-drill and tap the holes in the axle housing for the larger studs?
3. The axle shaft ends are the same for the early 3/4 ton Carryall and the civilian FFPW?
4. The differential cover for this axle is too shallow for 9-5/8 inch gears and would require either a retrofit deep cover (rare) or a spacer?

Is there anything I am missing? What is the availability like for the 9-5/8 inch geared center axles? Am I better off just getting one of these?

Thanks.
