I used a pickle fork (ball joint removal tool). The bearing came off easily and there was no damage to the bearing. However, I assume you will be installing a new bearing anyway.
You should be able to get a free loan of a bearing splitter at many chain auto parts stores like Auto Zone. Harbor Freight has bearing splitters and pickle forks for much less than $150
