Back in the early '50's we still had a switch under/behind the back bumper on lots of older vehicles for the tail-light. In some cases this was a separate low wattage light for street parking, but on a lot it was the main tail-light switch. I believe it was a safety issue to ensure your tail-lights were working when they were supposed to. Think I still have a parker off my dad's pre-war Bedford somewhere - it was fitted to the side of the truck bed close to the rear wheel, had it's own switch and a white/yellow lens facing forwards with a red lens to the rear. If he was parked in a street without street lighting, he would be sure this was switched on. Recall he always worried it might drain the battery, so would be out pre-dawn to switch it off. From memory the globe was about 2 watts.
