Ouch! running a diesel out of fuel, especially an older one is a no-no. you will have to prime the system, and hopefully it has the hand priming pump.
If it's an older unit expect the injector pump to go out in a month or two based on my personal experience of doing this in the 70's.
an expensive lesson to learn to not run a diesel out of fuel.
