Octane is actually a rating of hw hard it is to detonate in the cylinder. Highr octane, harder to ping an engine to death under high compression.
Diesel is rated in Cetane, higher nuber = easir to detonate. Cetane and Octane numbers cross at about 50?
Cetane and actane names are actually based on the number of carbons in the hydrocarbon ring. Octane = 8, umm cetane = 5?
Hydocarbons form rings, carbohydrates form long chains.
And that about exhaust my fule chemistry knowledge, one fule to another. ;^)
