Not to argue the point (too much) but when I think of "mass shootings" I think of a dozen victims and you think of 4. I expect that the frequency of "mass" (more than 1 victim) shootings follows a 1/f power spectrum just like the frequency versus amplitude distribution of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and traffic jams. In layman's terms, the larger the number of victims (or the more violent the storm), the less often it happens. In mathematical terms, it's equal power per decade of bandwidth.
In news and emotional terms, a dozen people shot dead in a suburban movie theater is major national news, whereas 4 gang-bangings of 3 victims apiece in Detroit or L.A. barely makes the local news, and I'm sure nobody has bothered to calculate how many Americans die every year in car wrecks on their way to and from movie theaters.
