When you pulled up to the pump at the service station the attendant would pump your gas, check your tires, oil and water. If you asked to have your battery checked, he walked into the garage and returned with a black rubber box. The box had holders for a squeeze pump and a hygrometer. One side of the box was a reservoir for distilled water and the other was compartmentalized to hold two small boxes of acid. The attendant would check the battery water/acid and add either water or acid, depending on the hygrometer reading. He would then remove the cables and clean the terminals and cable ends. He would reinstall them and you would be good to go. All for $5.00 worth of gas and a quarter tip.
