Thanks for the Navistar / heavy truck tip. I did as you suggested when I combined the two old joints into one reasonably-tight new one. Unfortunately now the splined end, which is part of the bell, has gotten buggered up because it slipped and of course they kept driving it until it wouldn't hold at all. I got it seated in a different place, so I hope it holds for now, but I would like to get a bell with nice sharp clean splines when I put the new steering gear in, or switch to one of those modern aftermarket joints.
