From your description, it sounds as if what I did is a bit similar. I have a supply of 1/4" O.D. plastic tubing that I have been using for 'sleeves'. It offers mechanical protection for the wiring, but in this case, the strain is still on the wire, especially the bend where it exits the light. The set-up you mention, with the washer, would remedy this. There is still the matter getting the 'tube' up, out of the way.
