My experience has been the opposite. Have just the one 3K genset and it's been reliable and a workhorse. Very handy to be able to adjust the output voltage, and have 3 phase and 3 Phase delta available, as well as 240 single phase. Certainly very loud and no substitute for a quiet modern unit.
This one was manufactured in 1973, Chrysler Outboard. Hadn't realized the earlier ones were by Columbia. I have a parts engine. Took a look at it's data plate, 1962, Columbia.
They also powered many of the Army (mechanical)Mules. Essentially a sheet of plywood with portal axles, an engine and a steering wheel
