The mechanicals are not the problem, you can always upgrade/replace those to get the speed you want.

The problem is that these vehicles have almost no crash protection. It was one of the reasons they were discontinued for US use in the first place.

Believe it or not being built like a tank is not actually a good thing for survivability. Not to mention the lack of air bags or other safety devices.
