I would think that the PTO driven trailer has two major complications. The normal PTO is constant ratio (unilike some Willys PTOs that change ratio with gear selection), so you would have a gearing mis-match problem as you shift through the gears. And, given ratios, I am pretty sure that the PTO doesn't match up to driveline speed in any gear, though I may be corrected.
I have heard these stories too. But, I just think that they are legend more than historically accurate.
