For your temp fuel source, just sink a good sturdy fuel hose into a gas can before the fuel pump, and crank the engine over observing the bowl on the bottom of the pump to make sure it's drawing from the can. It doesn't take much vacume to pull the fuel out of the can, so your engine should draw enough vacume to start the engine provided your fuel line from the pump to the carb is open. By-passin' the ignition switch shouldn't be a problem, either...but search one grimmlin' at a time...you did good on your starter...use the same attitude on the key ignition...think things thru before you act.
