I've been doing a little 'Googling' and believe I may have stumbled upon something similar to what I MIS-READ back then. I believe the reference was that due to the unique design of the slant-six it positioned the water pump to the side and slightly back while still maintaining central positioning to the radiator, thus making it's overall length less than that of similar engines with pumps mounted to the front of the block. I therefore assume that the slant-six installed in a PW would require the grill extensions as used with the 251.
