I have a 1990 D350 DRW 727 Cummins. It is a box truck weighing about 16,000. The axle gear ratio is rather high for towing (3.07 IIRC) because there is no overdrive on a 727. My truck will do 60mph all day but faster than that and you are going to loose mpg and be against the governor. Starting from a stop it is very slow out of the hole but when it gets going it does a fine job. The trans has over 300,000 miles and no signs of needing any rebuild so far. The later 1st gens (1991.5 and newer) got the A518 auto trans with overdrive that was not as reliable as the 727. If I were to buy a 1st gen for towing I would most certainly get a manual for the extra gears.
