All the pro-6 volt comments are valid. I chose conversion to 12 volt because it needed new wires. While doing this I eliminated the hassel of jump-starting a positive grd. system when nearly every other vehicle on the planet is neg. grd. And I was able to add in a circuit panel and several relays to "help" me feel a little better about leaving it in the garage without disconnecting the grd. cable for safety's sake. And, now I know that ALL of my ground connections are good, ALL of my hot wires are good, and I used heat shrink connectors everywhere, so I know that Mr. Road Salt won't be messing with my wires in the future.
The only real challenge is the wiper motor. Finding a 12 volt wiper motor has been like finding chicken's teeth. Go with the 8 volt battery for now, but don't rule out 12 volt conversion.
