Don't the Genuine Cummins thermostat have a plunger that moves to close off the bypass when opened?
I know if you run one without it will run hot.
Paul is also correct about a very slow fill rate.
I don't think yours has one anywhere but on the 5.9 with the water jacket after cooler there a valve on the rear of the cooler to open and allow air to vent.
